The Hyderabad-based gvk bioSciences Private Limited (gvk bio) plans to invest Rs 100 crore in the next two years to setup a world-class infrastructure facility for providing an enterprise-wide discovery and development services platform. This includes a complete range of scientific, consulting and contract research services in the areas of Informatics, Chemistry and Biology.
The training division of gvk bio (bioCampus) has already has introduced three new courses which cover the computational and experimental aspects of the entire drug discovery cycle – from Gene to Drugs. These new courses address the growing need of manpower in biotechnology and pharmaceutical organizations worldwide. The training division will organize extensive knowledge seminars on “Bioinformatics & Cheminformatics” in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala in March and April 2002.
bioCampus has also forged a global strategic alliance with Accelrys, a world leader in Bioinformatics & Cheminformatics software, to impart drug discovery and research process training in India. Tie ups with Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) for imparting training in Bioinformatics and Center for Plant Molecular Biology (CPMB) for training in Genome & Proteome Analysis are also a speciality of biocampus.
The new courses offered by biocampus are Bioinformatics, Genome & Proteome Analysis and Protein Modeling & Rational Drug Design.
Explaining about the courses, gvk sources informed that the Bioinformatics course imparts training in software application development, mathematics, statistics, cell & molecular biology and other bioinformatic tools. It is designed to address the growing need of manpower for the biotech and pharmaceutical organizations.
Genome & Proteome Analysis imparts training in the analysis of genomics and proteomics data. The course also includes several experiments in wet-lab and computational methodologies. Many biotech and pharmaceutical organizations are trying to analyze such data to produce new targets using in-silico tools. This course addresses the shortage of trained manpower in the above tools.
Protein Modeling & Rational Drug Design course involves the study of discovery strategies and methodologies to design a lead molecule using in silico methods without the available experimental approaches. Computational approaches to the drug discovery & design processes such as analogue based designs and pharmacophore based studies are covered in this module.
Sources said that bioCampus, a center of excellence, has the unique advantage of having the best infrastructure in the country and expert faculty, who have had prior experience in prestigious organizations such as Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), etc. The infrastructure includes a super computing environment with a multi-processor SGI Origin 2100 server with 30 SGI 02 workstations and access to the complete suite of software tools offered by Accelrys (formerly MSI). gvk bio, is part of the Rs.1500 crore, GVK conglomerate with trans-national presence in the Power, Hospitality, Particle Board, Infrastructure and Life Sciences sectors.
